Weight Loss Incentives

Statistics show that average weight loss for dieters on conventional diets amounts to a mere 5-8 pounds per year. Why is it so difficult to loose weight? According to some health experts, there are three reasons why loosing weight is so hard:

  1. We don't have a sufficiently powerful incentive;
  2. We let ourselves go hungry;
  3. We don't deal effectively with "bad days"

There was a survey conducted a couple of years ago about weight loss. In that survey, dieters where asked to identify the three biggest obstacles they faced when following a calorie-controlled eating plan. The most popular replies were:

  • Inadequate incentive to lose weight (75 percent)
  • Hunger (70 percent)
  • Bad days (69 percent)

What causes these diet problems, and how we can overcome them?

Most individuals that gain weight either do so because they consume too many calories, or burn too few. The most common cause of weight gain is a combination of both. On the other hand, to lose weight, one has to correct this calorie imbalance by changing their eating and exercise habits. But that's where the problem comes in, "creating a new habit."

Regular habits aren't easily changed, especially if it means cutting out our favorite food treats. The only way to do it is to find a strong incentive (motivational means) to help us change. The easiest way to create an incentive to what to make a change is to ask yourself a question, how will I benefit from loosing weight?

Most dieters have weak reasons for wanting to loose weight, so they start and then usually give up in a very short period of time. Reasons like "I'll feel better", or "it'll make my spouse happier", are weak reasons. With a weak reason, there's no incentive to loose weight.

To loose weight, and stay the course, one needs a strong reason, one that is personal, specific, and has a time frame attached to it. For example, "I'm going to loose weight so I can go scuba diving in the Caribbean in the summer of 2010. This is something I've always wanted to do, but I felt I was too heavy and so out of shape that I haven't done it before."

Now we have a strong reason for wanting to loose weight. We have set a time limit, summer of 2010, make it specific, going scuba diving, and made it personal, something I've always wanted to do. A reason like this will keep someone more focused on the task, and keep someone motivated to loose the weight.
