TriVita Health – Nutritional Punch
The little red fruit with a big nutritional punch: Cranberries provide an amazing variety of health benefits
It’s that time of year when cranberries are being harvested throughout North America. This juicy fruit is a fall seasonal favorite and can be found on many Thanksgiving and Christmas dining tables.
Although the cranberry has existed since the Iron Age, the Pilgrims first popularized it when they settled in America. Cranberries need a very special combination of factors to thrive. The main growing areas are Massachusetts, New Jersey, Oregon, Washington, Wisconsin and the Canadian provinces of British Columbia and Quebec.
Here are some interesting cranberry health facts. Did you know that cranberries are a rich source of vitamin A and C, carotene, thiamine, riboflavin and niacin. That’s right. It does. This delicious fruit also contains many essential minerals including sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, copper, sulfur, iron and iodine.
The vitamins and minerals in cranberries provide strong antioxidant protection. That’s why cranberries are often recommended to help protect the body against cold or flu. Also, because of their high Vitamin C content, cranberries were used to prevent scurvy, a vitamin C deficiency condition.
Cranberries have been shown to be effective in preventing urinary tract infections, which are extremely common in women. In fact, one of every two women will have a urinary tract infection during her lifetime. Several studies have confirmed that cranberries are effective in preventing bladder infections regardless of age. Women can significantly reduce their risk of getting urinary tract infections by drinking about 10 ounces of cranberry juice daily.
New evidence also indicates that cranberry juice can help prevent kidney stones, which are often caused by high levels of ionized calcium in the urine. Cranberries help prevent this condition because they are rich in quinic acid, which can help lower these ionized calcium levels. At least 16 ounces of cranberry juice is recommended daily to help prevent kidney stones for both men and women.
So, enjoy tasty cranberries during the festive holiday season and remember that this power-packed berry is good for you, too.
