TriVita Health -- In Celebration of Women
Nurturing – it starts with you
By Chaplain Gene Henderson
As a chaplain, it is a blessing to share some simple thoughts and spiritual insights with you. My daily desire is to apply the Word of God to today’s world. This month the VitaJournal focuses on women’s health featuring articles on stress, balance, fatigue, relationships and other issues relevant to women. But I’d like to point out some things that I’ve come to learn after being married to my beautiful wife Sharon for the past 42 years.
The gift of nurturing
The focus of Sharon’s life has been to serve others. She is always there for me, our children and our grandchildren. Sharon is a nurturer. That is a trait that is God-given in many women. How else would they know exactly how to deal with that newborn the second it is handed to them?
Numerous times I have counseled with expectant parents and listened to their fear on raising children in an uncertain world. My counsel to them is that they will know what to do when the time arises. You see God has instilled in every one of us the provision for the vision He has given us. God wouldn’t give us a certain dream, vision, passion or purpose without providing for that dream or vision.
Over the years, I’ve spoken to many women who share with me all they do for their spouses and children. When I ask them, “What are you doing for you,” most of them hesitate and can’t even come back with a response. They feel it is their role to be everything to every one of heir loved ones.
“If Mama ain’t happy…”
Nurturing is meant not only for the benefit of others, it’s also meant to be used on ourselves. This month, I would like to take the time to encourage women to love themselves and discover what they are passionate about. You may think, “That’s being selfish. My family comes first.” However, if you’re not loving and nurturing yourself, you’re not going to be as equipped as you can be to give your best to your family or even your career. There’s some truth to the saying, “If mama ain’t happy, then nobody’s happy!”
Uncovering passions and purpose
Many women who devote their entire lives to their children or their spouse wind up feeling empty when those children leave or their spouse dies. They haven’t found out who they really are, what passions they might have had, and often wind up without a feeling or purpose. We all know what happens to our lives without passion an purpose: our health is negatively impacted emotionally, spiritually and physically.
I have to say that my wife Sharon has found a balance between nurturing herself and her family. She recently told me, “It should be against the law to be this happy!” Sharon has found things she is passionate about outside of her family, and she’s proud of them.
In celebration of our awesome TriVita female family, I encourage each of you to take some time alone with God and get back into that habit if you have fallen out of it. Psalms 37:4 tells us, “Delight yourself also in the Lord, and He will give you the desires of your heart.” Ask Him to show you those passions, those stifled dreams that may have gotten tossed out the window as life has unfolded for you. As you delight yourself in Him, He will not only reveal those dreams, and passions, but He will provide the way to see them to fruition.
