TriVita – Cheers to those with a glass half full

TriVita – Cheers to those with a glass half full

Optimistic people have something to smile about – a longer life!

None of us like the thought of getting older, although it is inevitable.  In the age of Botox and other cosmetic procedures, you can alter your physical appearance to keep yourself looking younger.  But the way you perceive yourself can make a big difference in the way you age and your longevity.

The mental health connection
We are all familiar with lifestyle changes that can promote healthy aging, such as exercise, proper nutrition, supplementation and not smoking.  We have those things ground into us in everything we read or see on television.  However, there are also psychological characteristics, which can help predict life span.  Some research has shown that people who are relatively more depressed, hostile or anxious are unlikely to live as long as others.

How do you respond to stress?
Stress in itself is not ultimately what harms us – it’s our perception of stress that often makes the difference between health and wellness.  Driving to work in 110 degree heat only to discover you have a flat tire and an expired AAA card can destroy your entire day, if you allow it to do so.  You see, you do have a choice in controlling your mood and your attitude.

Optimism and moods
Have you ever been in a bad mood, only to have someone ask you if you are?  What does that do?  It puts you in an even worse mood!  Mood influences the positive or negative thoughts that dominate your brain.  It filters how we see things in particular situations.  There are ways people can lift their moods:

• When bad things happen, try to take them less personally, find reasons why they might have happened and work to fix the situation

• Compare yourself to others who are in worse situations

• Use exercise, deep breathing or relaxation techniques.

Why do optimists live longer?
It is possible that optimists may have more effective coping strategies than pessimists.  They often seek out the help of family and friends when facing a difficult situation, are more likely to make healthful lifestyle choices, and listen carefully to the recommendations of their healthcare providers.

Being realistic
Do the phrases positive thinking or seeing the bright side turn you off or annoy you?  Rather than worrying about being optimistic all the time and being blind to reality, it’s more important to learn to turn your negative thought patterns into positive ones.  Not everyone is born an optimist, and it is not realistic to expect that everything will always turn out for the best.  However, it’s unhealthy to always expect the worst.

There is still hope
If you find yourself creating negative scenarios that prevent you from making constructive plans for your future, talk to someone you trust about your outlook.  Becoming optimistic does require belief, hope and determination – things we’re all capable of.  You may not be in the place in your life you would have hoped at this age, but remembering the happy times, setting some achievable goals and giving yourself something to look forward to may lift your spirits and lead you into a longer, healthier life – no matter what your age!
