Choosing the proper keywords can make or break your web site. Potential customers (people searching the web) search for sites that will provide a solution to meet their need. If your web site doesn't have the keywords they're looking for, they probably will not find you. Since people search Google based on keywords, it's very important to have your site optimized for the proper keywords.
There are many theories about keywords and keyword research. However, there are several sites designed to assist you in helping finding the proper keyword(s). If you choose to do it yourself, here are a few of the free keyword research sites available:
The SEO Book Keyword Tool (http://tools.seobook.com/keyword-tools/seobook/) lists searches related to the keyword you provide. This tool is great for expanding your list.
Wordtracker (http://www.wordtracker.com) helps identify keywords that will help your ranking on search engines. Wordtracker also gives you other keyword combinations that you may have overlooked.
The Keyword Tumbler (http://www.keywordtumbler.com) is a free keyword research marketing tool that takes your existing keyword phrase and generates multiple variations of it, simply by mixing the words in each keyword phrase around.
Finding the proper keywords is an art; so if you feel like an artist, feel free to take on the challenge. Personally, I would rather have a professional SEO specialist help me find the proper keyword(s), ad then help me with a search engine optimization campaign, so I can get my site highly ranked on Google.
If you're taking on the challenge, a great way to find the proper keyword(s) for your site is to work backwards. In other words, what would a customer search for if they were looking for your site? You should literally put yourself in the consumer's place. Let go of any preconceived notions you have about what you think your keywords should be. Become a customer of your site, and ask yourself, what would I type into Google's search box to find my site?
Once you have the proper keywords, go back over your web site, and reread it. How many keywords, or words that are related to my site, do I have? Always remember, when writing (rewriting) content for your site you should use words that are not only related to your content, but ones that are popular search words as well. This is what some expert SEO specialists call keyword optimization, or choosing the most searched keywords related to your content.
As you go over your site, spend some time listing all of the words and phrases that are related to your web site content. Get ideas from everyone you can think of and list them all. Visit competitors' sites and see what meta tags, title, and descriptions they're using. After you have completed your research, go back over your site again; make the necessary changes to your content to reflect the keyword and/or keyword phrases you have selected.
Remember, the greatest web site in the world is not so great if no one can find it. Research your keywords carefully, from a consumer's point of view. Optimize your site properly. Get your site indexed by Google. Receive additional training on the finer points of search engine optimization and learn how to get your site highly ranked. And best of all, use a powerful SEO system that will improve your chances of people finding it.
