Benefits of Vitamin C

Ascorbic acid, found in vitamin C supplements, prevents several debilitating conditions and increases the body's immunity. Protecting cells, enhancing the immune system, and its antioxidant agent, are just a few of the benefits you receive when taking vitamin C. Vitamin C also helps to keep collagen, tendons, and ligaments strong and healthy.

Collagen is the most ubiquitous substance in the body because it is the most abundant of the fibers contained in connective tissue. Connective tissue gives our body form and supports our organs. Collagen is everywhere in the body, and vitamin C plays a role in the formation of collagen.

From my research, I've learned that when collagen is produced, there is a complex series of events, some occurring inside of the cell, and some outside of the cell. Vitamin C is active inside of the cell, where it hydroxylates (adds hydrogen and oxygen) to two amino acids: proline and lysine. This helps form a precursor molecule called procollagen that is later packaged and modified into collagen outside of the cell. Without vitamin C, collagen formation is disrupted, causing a wide variety of problems throughout the body.

Vitamin C benefits also includes the recycling of other antioxidants, and in most cases, it's better to consume Vitamin C along with other antioxidants like carotenoids, vitamin E and flavonoids.

Vitamin C can be used as an antidote for illnesses such as cold and flu. As a matter of fact, it reduces the intensity and duration of many health ailments. Wounds are reported to heal much faster since ascorbic acid has inflammation inhibitory action. Gums are protected by a regular consumption of the ascorbic acid. For this purpose, it is generally taken with flavonoids. Vitamin C has also been known to reduce cholesterol levels, high blood pressure and has helped in preventing arteriosclerosis.

With all the good qualities hidden within this all important vitamin, what happens if there is a deficiency of vitiman C? Vitamin C deficiencies include susceptibility to infection particularly bronchial infections and cold, joint ache and altered digestion. Other signs of ascorbic acid deficiencies are lethargy (lack of energy), susceptibility to bruise easily, weak teeth and poor digestion. The most known vitamin C deficiency is the disease called scurvy. However, it's not so common in Western countries; it features soft spongy bleeding gums, severe debility, edema, poor wound healing, and bleeding under the skin.

The benefits from vitamin C can be achieved mostly when it is consumed on a regular daily basis, through supplements. Vitamin C is not a one time dose. As mentioned previously, the body requires ascorbic acid for maintaining various body systems and their functions. Vitamin C is water soluble, which means, the body loses some of it through urine. That's why taking a daily supplement of this all important vitamin is advised.

There are many researches that indicate that ascorbic acid prevents certain types of cancer as it protects healthy cells from free-radical damage. According to research, it specifically helps reducing the risks of cancers of the stomach and esophagus. This is possible because it blocks the conversion of nitrates and nitrites have been known to turn into cancer-causing components.

Consult your health care professional for additional information regarding vitamin C, and also get their recommendation for the proper dosage. It is possible that both over consumption and/or under usage of this vitamin may can be harmful to the body. If you like the majority, you'd rather recive all the benefits of taking vitamin C, and stay away from health issues that may arise by not having enough vitamin C.

Most pharmaceutical companies claim that all supplements are the same. I believe there is a difference between many supplements. Although I don't have all the answers, I personally prefer the Vitamin C crystals, but it's up to you to find the supplements that deliver the best results. One way to find a supplement that will meet your needs is to search Google.
