TriVita Health -- Women and Stress

TriVita Health -- Women and Stress
Seven healthy ways to ease the damage of everyday pressure

Are you having trouble sleeping or concentrating?  Have you noticed frequent headaches or upset stomach?  You may be suffering from one of the major maladies of modern-day times: stress.

Long recognized as an enemy of a good health, stress is not an equal opportunity offender.  As we celebrate women’s health this month, it’s a good time to look at stress and how it affects women.  Experts say that women generally “tend and befriend” n response to stress.  This applies to both everyday work pressure, family problems, as well as the stress that comes from major events like childbirth or death.

Tend and Befriend
“Tend” means the way women protect and care for loved ones; “befriend” describes the way women seek out and get social support.  There’s a chemical reason for this.  Oxytocin, calming chemical released in a women’s body during childbirth, is believed to promote the tend/befriend response.  This same chemical is release during times of stress.  So if you find yourself caregiving loved one s or reaching out to your social network even more than usual, it may be your boy’s way of saying, “Help!  I’m stressed!”  Men, on the other hand, tend to respond to stress with hostility or withdrawal because of the testosterone in their bodies.

How Stress Affects Us
When we’re worried or anxious, stress triggers changes in the body that can make us more likely to get sick, or make existing ailments worse.  Here’s just a partial list of stress physical effects:
Lack of energy
Lack of concentration
Stomach cramping/bloating
Depression
Weight gain or loss
Heart problems
Irritable bowel syndrome

When stress strike, don’t fall into the unhealthy coping traps of overeating, over-drinking or smoking: they just make things worse.  Instead, try the following simple, healthy stress-relievers to help you regain calmness and control.

Seven Stress-Busting Solutions
1. Relax.  Stop and take some deep breaths – literally.  Deep breathing helps you keep calm.  So does yoga, prayer and listening to soothing music.
2. Take some “you” time.  Give yourself at least a few minutes a day to take a walk, call a friend or do something else just for you to take care of you.
3. Sleep.  Sleeping poorly can both increase your stress and raise your risk of getting sick.  So try to keep to a regular sleep routine, and keep your bedroom cool and dark.
4. Eat right.  Fuel your body with nutritious foods: fruits, vegetables, whole grains and lean protein.  Try to avoid caffeine, sugar, high-fat foods and processed foods.
5. Get “high” on exercise.  You know how good it feels when you ride a bike or rake leaves?  It’s your body’s way of saying thanks: exercise releases chemicals called endorphins that ease stress.
6. Talk it out.  When you’re feeling over loaded, it often helps to talk to a friend who will listen without judging and maybe empathize.
7. Supplement your health.  Combat stress with the nutrients your body needs.  Top choice: the unique formula of Adaptogen 10 Plus
