Vitamin C Supplements

Vitamin C also known as ascorbic acid is an amazing antioxidant offering innumerable health benefits when consumed as vitamin C supplements. The supplements are very useful in keeping the adrenal gland functioning healthy and also for gums and tissue repair and body's general growth.

It is not a secret anymore that vitamin C deficiency can result in a disease called scurvy. The condition is not so common in Western countries. The results of scurvy are soft spongy bleeding gums, severe debility; edema, delayed wound healing, and hemorrhages typically beneath the skin.

Vitamin C is probably one of the most highly publicized vitamins. That being the case, it's probably the least understood of all the vitamins. Tons of research has gone into the importance of vitamin C and many articles have been written. There are also plenty of supplements sold online and in stores. How can we determine which supplement is the best?

First let's take a look at vitamin C supplements and what effects they can have on the human body.

Vitamin C supplements defend the body against the damaging effects of harmful environmental effects, pollution as well as aid the body in the manufacturing of anti-stress hormones and interferon. The body requires vitamin C supplements for the metabolism of tyrosine, phenylalanine and folic acid.

Vitamin C supplements are believed to control the high blood pressure. Yet other benefits discovered related taking vitamin C supplements are its efficacy to reduce the cholesterol and lipid levels. It also thus prevents hazardous conditions such as atherosclerosis.

More of the benefits of vitamin C supplements include protecting the body from various infections, cancerous growth, and enhancing the immune system. Vitamin C supplements help the body's capability to absorb the iron. It's also very important in the formation of collagen and it helps in protecting against bruising and blood clotting. Ascorbic acid is supposed to help in healing the wounds and also some problems like stomatitis.

Evidence shows that there are benefits from taking vitamin E and vitamin C supplements together since they are reported to work synergistically. They reinforce and augment each other's antioxidant properties. In other words these vitamin supplements work together that make them to possess greater effects as compared to their separate usage. Vitamin C supplements help getting rid of oxidants in the form of free radicals and hence save the body tissues and cells.

If you do not take vitamin C supplements in proper quantity, you may lack of vitamin C i.e. ascorbic acid and then there would be signs of deficiencies of this vitamin such as very likely to have infections particularly poor digestion and colds, joint pains and bronchial infections. Other signs of deficiencies of vitamin C are exhausting without any work, dullness, debility, lack of energy, tendency to bruise easily, delayed wound healing and lack of concentration.

Apart from Vitamin C supplements, it can also be obtained from a proper diet. However, it's important to know that the body cannot manufacture this vitamin and most of the ascorbic acid consumed in one's diet is excreted in urine since it is a water soluble vitamin. Because of its water soluble quality, daily vitamin C supplements are required to keep the body healthy.

Foods rich in vitamin C include fruits and vegetables such as oranges, grapefruit, broccoli, spinach, tomatoes, potatoes, strawberries, and sweet red peppers. Vitamin C is easily damaged during the food preparation stage, such as during chopping, exposure to air, cooking, boiling, and being submerged in water. The amount of Vitamin C is high enough in most foods that the quantity that remains after processing is usually more than enough for a daily supply.

The recommended dietary allowance (RDA) of vitamin C is 60 to 90 milligrams per day. Men should consume more vitamin C than women and individuals who smoke cigarettes are encouraged to consume 35 more mg of vitamin C than average adults. This is due to the fact that smoking depletes vitamin C levels in the body and is a catalyst for biological processes which damage cells. As little as 5-7 mg a day will prevent scurvy, and the average American gets about 72 mg a day.

On the down side, pregnant women should not take daily doses that are more than 5,000 milligrams since the fetus may get affected with such an excessive dose that ultimately may cause harm.

Most pharmaceutical companies claim that all supplements are the same. I believe there is a difference between many supplements. Although I don't have all the answers, I personally prefer the Vitamin C crystals, but it's up to you to find the supplements that deliver the best results. One way to find a supplement that will meet your needs is to search Google.

For superior Vitamin C potency, your body is better served with crystalline cells (in either the loose or tablet form) versus the finely-ground, granular form.
