TriVita -- The MIGHTY Mushroom

TriVita -- The MIGHTY Mushroom

A hearty vegetable full of antioxidants and powerful nutrients

Though often thought of as a vegetable, mushrooms are actually fungi and have many of the same nutritional attributes found in meat, beans and grains.  Mushrooms are low in calories, fat free, and provide a rich nutrient mix, including things such as protein, B vitamins (riboflavin and niacin), minerals and Ergothioneine (a natural occurring antioxidant).  Interestingly enough, mushrooms provide Vitamin D, a nutrient not offered by any vegetable, fruit or nut.

Vitamin D is essential because it helps the body absorb calcium and magnesium, which are vital for the normal development of healthy teeth and bones.  It also helps maintain ample levels of calcium and phosphorus in the blood.  Vitamin D is normally produced by the human body after being in the sun for 15 minutes.  Now you can beat the heat and get your Vitamin D by adding mushrooms to your diet!

Mushrooms contain vital minerals your body needs, such as:

• Selenium – works as an antioxidant to protect your cells from damage that could lead to heart disease, cancer or other ailments)

• Copper – helps make red blood cells, to carry oxygen throughout the body

• Potassium – helps maintain normal fluid and mineral balance to control blood pressure; in fact, one medium portabella mushroom has more potassium than a whole banana.

When it comes to the mighty mushroom, be sure to eat your share!  It’s easy to do, simply by including mushrooms in healthy and appetizing dishes.
