TriVita Health: Are You Aging Prematurely?
Too much stress can cause it
Traffic jams
Deadlines at work
Rising gas prices
The economic downturn
Problems at home
All these things can contribute to your daily stress load. You probably already know that stress can exhaust you and compromise your immune system. But did you also know that stress could age you?
A groundbreaking study in 2004 showed that chronic stress could shrivel the tips of certain genes inside cells, which can shorten their lifespan and speed the body’s deterioration. Researchers at the University of California at San Francisco analyzed blood samples from 58 women – 39 of who took care of a chronically ill child. They found that blood cells from women who had spent years caring for a chronically ill child were, genetically, about 10 years older than those of women with healthy children. They also found that just thinking you’re stressed could add years to your biological age.
The researchers studied the DNA of white blood cells, specifically, the tip of each cell’s chromosomes. This DNA shrinks each time the cell divides and duplicates itself but is partially restored each time it divides. The length of the DNA piece is a basic measure of a cell’s age. The women who had spent years caring for ill children had shorter DNA pieces, as did the women who felt they were stressed – whether they had ill children or not.
Stress and healthy aging:
Never the two shall meet! As research shows, stress – and simply the perception of stress – can lead to unhealthy, premature aging. So what steps can you take to keep your stress in check and avoid premature aging?
Put stress in its place
Give stress the keys to the street with these lifestyle changes:
• Stress Management
• Deep breathing – Deep breathing reduces stress. Three deep breaths can break the cycle of tension. Ten minutes of deep breathing cuts stress hormones in half. Twenty minutes of deep breathing restores hormone balance and gives you deeper sleep to restore your mind and body.
• Prayer and meditation – Sit somewhere cool and quiet and let your thoughts be still. Prayer can really help; remember, you don’t have to handle everything on your own!
• Prioritize – We live in a fast-paced, hectic world. There are simply too many demands made on us. Establish no more than three priorities each day; a long to-do list can be overwhelming – and discouraging!
• Learn to say “no” – Take a look at your roles (spouse, parent, volunteer) and identify where you are over-committed. Develop a plan for reducing your commitment in the areas you identified.
• Proper Nutrition
• Fruits and vegetables – The stress response robs your body of the nutrients it needs for optimum health. That’s why it’s especially important to get the recommended amount (if not more) of fruits and vegetables each day: seven servings for women and nine servings for men.
• Adaptogens – These plants extracts are renowned for their ability to help the body “adapt” to stress and stressful situations. Learn about the formulation of TriVita’s Adaptogen 10 Plus.
• Exercise
• Exercise can help relieve stress by reducing the production of stress hormones, curbing your body’s stress response and even improving your mood. Experts recommend adults get 30 minutes of activity five or more days a week. Be sure to include the following types of exercise:
• Aerobic
• Strength
• Balance
• Flexibility.
Help avoid premature aging by reducing the stress in your life – so you can thoroughly enjoy the rewards of good health!
