TriVita Health: Prostate cancer risk reduced with extra servings of broccoli

Norwich, United Kingdom

Researchers have discovered that extra servings of broccoli can help protect men from prostate cancer.

Researchers at Britain’s Institute of Food Research studied 24 men who had pre-cancerous lesions that increase prostate cancer risk.  The men were divided into two groups; one group ate four extra servings of broccoli per week for a year and the other group ate four extra servings of peas each week for a year.

The men who ate the broccoli showed 400 to 500 positive changes in the genes that are known to help fight cancer.  A chemical in broccoli seemed to turn on genes that prevent cancer from developing while shutting off other genes that help cancer spread.

The study, published in the Public Library of Science journal, PLoS One, is the first human trial that has investigated exactly how vegetables help to reduce cancer risk.
