TriVita: Forget the “Fountain of Youth”
True vitality comes through healthy aging.
By Brazos Minshew, Chief Science Officer
Spanish explorer Juan Ponce de Leon spent much of his life searching in vain for the “Fountain of Youth.” Today, the cosmetic industry would have you believe that there are several fountains you can sip from... What’s in the water? Lifts, sculpts, tucks, peels and a host of other unpleasant surgeries and procedures. Although they may make you appear more youthful, do they really extend your life or increase your vitality?
The answer is a resounding “NO!” True, lasting vitality comes from taking care of your self physically, emotionally and spiritually.
Healthy aging
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report that 80% of older adults have at least one chronic condition, and 50% have at least two. We define healthy aging as living with vitality instead of disability! That means having the strength and vigor you need to engage in the normal functions of life including love, play, work and worship. But how exactly do you go about it?
The best way to start is by making some healthy lifestyle changes. Include these keys to good health:
1. Nutrients
2. Exercise
3. Sleep
4. Involvement.
Nutrients... and more nutrients!
Chances are good you’ve been advised to eat more fruits and vegetables. That’s actually great advice; fruits and vegetables provide a host of healthy-aging nutrients. They are packed with vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and other health-boosting compounds. Scientists are finding more and more links between healthy foods – and a healthy body. Some of the best nutrients for healthy aging include:
• Antioxidants – Antioxidants neutralize free radicals, which can cause premature aging, among other negative effects. Vitamin C is one of the most powerful antioxidants you can take; it extends the life of every other antioxidant in your body as well as nourishes most of your body systems.
• B vitamins – B vitamins are your body’s feel-good vitamins – and they nourish your heart and brain health. As you age, it becomes increasingly difficult for your body to absorb these critical nutrients so you may want to consider supplementation.
• Omega-3 essential fatty acids – These nutrients are called essential because they are vital to good health! These “good” fats do everything from acting as anti-inflammatories to helping build hormones.
Exercise your right to healthy aging
In a 2003 statement before the United States Senate, the Deputy Director of the National Institute on Aging stated, “Compared to their sedentary counterparts, older exercisers are not only more likely to live to an advanced old age, but are more likely than non-exercisers to remain independent right up to the end of their lives, according to a 1999 study by Luigi Ferrucci, now head of the NIA’s Baltimore Longitudinal Study on Aging.”
The following four types of exercise are a necessary part of your fitness regimen, according to the National Institute on Aging:
• Endurance – aerobic exercise that gets the heart, lungs and circulatory system working optimally
• Strength – this helps build muscle, which can help reduce frailty
• Balance exercises – these can help reduce your risk of falls
• Flexibility – keeps the body limber and may help reduce your risk of injury.
Wake up to fresh possibilities
Sleep is when your body rejuvenates and repairs itself. But sleep patterns tend to shift with age and many people report that it becomes harder to fall asleep – and stay asleep. Although sleep may become more elusive as you age, research shows you need just as much as you did when you were younger. Aim for 7 ½ to 9 hours of sleep every night.
• Keep your bedroom cool and dark.
• Don’t read or watch television in bed.
• Engage in a soothing activity before you go to bed; take a warm bath or listen to relaxation tapes.
Get involved
A recent study from the Harvard School of Public Health showed that people with more social connections had a slower rate of memory decline than people with few social connections. And in general, people who engage in activities report fewer illnesses – and have greater energy. Try volunteering or join a social group. Take a class to help stimulate your mind while you meet new people.
It’s also important to have a healthy outlook on life; this includes feeling and expressing gratitude, giving and receiving love and practicing forgiveness.
Start living the life you imagined – and start today! Cosmetic changes are only superficial. Work on your health from the inside out – you’ll be amazed by the energy, vitality and well-being that will follow.
