Finding your site on Google may be one of the most important aspects of your search engine optimization efforts, or at least it should be. Many pages get missed by the search engines because of improper 301 redirects. You may also loose out on valuable search engine traffic due to incorrect configuring of your redirects.
It's very important that your redirects are set up properly. So, when a search engine comes to crawl your website it's able to follow any redirects you have set up.
Having all your pages indexed is extremely important. However many webmasters, especially novice web designers, do not properly set up these redirects. You can learn more about 301 redirects, and what they actually mean to your web site, by searching Google.
If you already set up your redirects, here's a great tool that I've found, to help you determine if the redirect you have created is search engine friendly.
The reason we do 301 redirects is Google. Google does not like error pages. And if you have a bunch of 404 error pages (pages that do not exist anymore), because of a web site redesign, its harder for Google to crawl your site and you can loose the page rank that you may have already established.
Remember, Google is the largest search engine. They are also the search engine that SEO experts use to gage the popularity of their web site. If you follow the SEO guidelines set forth by Google, you will be one your way to getting your site noticed on Google.
