A recent study shows that "obese people with sleep apnea who lose 10% of their weight have a good chance of improving their condition." [1] This is great news, but I have to ask a couple of questions. 1. What measures can be taken to lose that ten percent? 2. Do weight loss systems work? Let's first take a look at sleep apnea, benefits of losing weight, and then we'll get into my questions.
The study's lead author, Gary Foster, director of the Center for Obesity Research and Education at
What is sleep apnea? The American Sleep Apnea Association describes it this way:
The Greek word "apnea" literally means "without breath." There are three types of apnea: obstructive, central, and mixed; of the three, obstructive is the most common. Despite the difference in the root cause of each type, in all three, people with untreated sleep apnea stop breathing repeatedly during their sleep, sometimes hundreds of times during the night and often for a minute or longer.
Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is caused by a blockage of the airway, usually when the soft tissue in the rear of the throat collapses and closes during sleep. In central sleep apnea, the airway is not blocked but the brain fails to signal the muscles to breathe. Mixed apnea, as the name implies, is a combination of the two. With each apnea event, the brain briefly arouses people with sleep apnea in order for them to resume breathing, but consequently sleep is extremely fragmented and of poor quality. [2]
Although getting a better night of sleep helps the body to function at a higher degree, there are so many more benefits associated to weight loss than better rest. According to the Life Clinic website, "reducing your weight by 5-10 percent can decrease your chance of developing heart disease or having a stroke. You can improve your heart function, blood pressure and your levels of blood cholesterol and triglycerides." [3]
All of this weight loss talk is great news, but what measures can be taken to lose that first five to ten percent, and then help someone maintain their weight once it's been lost? That brings me to my next question; do weight loss systems work? Many systems make claims that they work, but many of these systems fail to provide scientific proof.
