I'm sure you've heard or read this many times, the human body naturally produces vitamin D through exposure to sunlight. Even with all the evidence pointing to these facts, why do so many Americans avoid the sun and take the chance of making insufficient amounts of vitamin d?

Some reasons may include computer games, fear and even laziness. I believe the media, along with the medical profession has given the sun a bad rap. Yes, it may cause cancer, and I'm not a doctor, but my feeling is it takes a lot more exposure to the sun than what's recommended to produce the vitamin d your body needs.

According to experts, "it takes about 30 minutes of exposure to strong (summer-strength) sunlight to avoid deficiency, and darker skinned people need more exposure than the lighter skinned do." This may explain why African-Americans, people of Middle-Eastern descent, some Hispanics, and other dark skinned people suffer higher rates of vitamin D deficiency.

I written on this subject before, but it's worth repeating. Most people who live in the northern states don’t get enough strong sunlight during the winter months. On the other side, those living in the southern states may not make sufficient vitamin D during the summer especially if they "over-avoid" the sun or use excessive amounts of sunscreen.

As more and more Americans continue to live their lives indoors, that is, with little or no exposure to strong sunlight for the 20 to 40 minutes a day, for light skinned people, or more, for darker skinned people, you will see an increase of cases of vitamin d deficiency. This sunlight exposure is very important to produce adequate blood levels of vitamin d.

No many foods contain a lot of vitamin d. However, tuna and salmon contain the highest amounts of vitamin d. Even milk, fortified with vitamin d, is not a great source of this all important vitamin.

As mentioned many times in my articles, I'm not a doctor, but I am a person that does research and reads a lot of medical articles. Eating Out On a diet

You can still maintain your diet when dining out, do not throw away those hard lost pounds just plan and prepare, just as you would at home.

What if you have a scheduled lunch meeting, or you're going out to dinner with friends? No worries! You can eat healthy in just about every restaurant you can imagine if you follow the guidelines, combine the right foods, and stop eating when comfortably full, not stuffed.

For example, at lunchtime, you'll want a lean, complete protein, a natural starchy carb (and/or a little fruit), and a fibrous carb. I can't think of a restaurant anywhere that doesn't offer an option to meet these guidelines.

If you're eating at a Mexican restaurant, for example, you could order fajitas with lean meat and lots of veggies (ask them to go very light on the oil), with a side of black beans and brown rice.

Or if you want to do fast food, go to Subway and have a turkey sub with lots of veggies on whole wheat (hold the mayo but go for the mustard). Even burger chains now have excellent chicken salads with a variety of veggies and some apple slices as well.

Every restaurant has at least a couple of good options, if you follow the guidelines and order wisely. Pick a side salad instead of fries, request that your chicken or fish be grilled instead of fried.

Ask that your food be prepared with no oil or butter; request that sauces, condiments, and dressings come on the side. That way, you -not the chef- have complete control over how much you add.

Here are a few more tips to ensure your success when you have plans to dine away from home.

Eat regular frequent meals during the day. Don't starve yourself to compensate for your dinner plans. Do eat fewer calories during the day, if you want, to compensate for a beer or other "non-ideal" foods, but make sure that you don't go into the meal starved or you'll likely lose control and make unwise choices.

Also, if you begin feeling hungry before dinner, eat a small healthy snack to hold you over. This will allow you to arrive at the meal pleasantly hungry so you can relax, eat slowly, and enjoy the meal rather than needing to devour everything in sight.

Be sure to order what you really want when eating out. If you only order what you think you should rather than what you really want, you may be satisfied physically but not psychologically and you'll most likely crave something more and give in to temptation later in the evening.

Just remember to make healthy changes to the foods: cut down on the fattening or sugar-packed extras, such as cheese, oil, butter, sour cream, dressings, etc, that are really not needed to enjoy the meal.

The most important point to remember when dining out is that YOU are the paying customer and you can request the way the food is prepared. And unless you say something in advance, your food may be high in fat and sugar, not things you want to be eating for maximum fat loss.

They also found that even those with slightly elevated cholesterol increased their risk by 52 percent.

"This is an early risk factor for dementia that can be modified and managed by lowering cholesterol through healthy lifestyle changes," says the study's senior author, Dr. Rachel Whitmer, adding that almost 100 million Americans have either high or borderline cholesterol levels. [1]

A Bit of History Behind the Nopal Cactus Fruit The New Super Fruit

NOPAL - An Abundant Nutritional Reservoir! And boy is that an understatement. Nopal cactus fruit defends your body against dangerous toxins that threaten cellular health, lead to inflammation and trigger a whole host of diseases.

So how did this new super fruit get it's start?

History:

Nopal is a large cactus with a woody trunk and large top, many oblong joints, small, yellow barbed spines, bright yellow flowers and red fruit with a juicy, white, sweet flesh and numerous black seeds. It is said to be a native of Mexico, where it is considered the symbol of identity of the Mexican people and is even included on the Mexican flag, depicting a Mexican golden eagle perched upon the Opuntia cactus, devouring a snake.

About twenty thousand years ago, Opuntia (or Nopal) began to develop as a food, and the plant's development was said to enable human settlement and cultural development in many parts of the arid lands, where it was considered the lifeblood of those ancient cultures, particularly in times of drought.

Approximately 5000 to 7000 B. C., prehistoric indigenous groups began the cultivation of a series of native plants, including beans, opuntia, peppers and agave, etc., and in Pre-Columbian times, Nopal was considered an important staple food (for both humans and livestock), a beverage, a medicine, a source of dye and was included in religious and magical rites. During the Spanish Colonial Period, Nopal gained further importance as forage when cattle was introduced to the semiarid areas and there was a consequent depletion of grasslands. Its beneficial uses as a medicine and beverage were also gaining in reputation.

In the De la Cruz-Badiano Codex of 1552, it was noted that Nopal treated several ailments and was used to cure burns and soothe wounds, and Friar Motolinia said, "these Indians, from a land so sterile that they lack water, drink the juice of these leaves of nopal." Nopal received its botanical genus name, Opuntia, from Tournefot, who thought the plant was similar to a thorny plant that grew in the town of Opus, in Greece.

After the Spanish conquest, Nopal spread from Mexico to practically all the Americas (from Canada to Patagonia, in Argentina) and may now be found in tropical and arid regions throughout the world, including the southwestern United States. It grows in Israel, where the Prickly Pear is called tzabar (Hebrew:) and it is the origin of the slang term, Sabra, meaning a native-born Israeli Jew.

Some of the constituents in Nopal include water, fat, mucopolysaccharide soluble fibers, carbohydrate, protein, saponins, glycosides, a flavonoid (quercetin), minerals and large amounts of B1, B6, niacin, riboflavin and pantothenic acid.

Chronic Pain and Diabetes

One of the groups of people who are particularly challenged with chronic pain is diabetics.  Diabetics of course are dealing with elevated blood sugars and sometimes with a lot of complications from those elevated blood sugars.

One of the key components to a diabetic being in good control is developing a good exercise program.   Good exercise generally means regular daily exercise.   This is crucial because it improves the ability of insulin to work in the body (reverses insulin resistance) and also burns extra calories.  

Now if you have a lot of pain as people with chronic pain do, it can be a real challenge to exercise regularly.  Paradoxically, regular exercise can help reduce the pain in chronic pain! 

I have long promoted a strategy that uses a water based exercise program for this dilemma.  In essence it kills 2 birds with one stone.   It helps to control the diabetes and it helps to decrease the chronic pain.

Before we go much farther though I should define things:  what is Chronic Pain anyway?

Well, we all know what pain is.   But what is chronic pain?    Well the purpose of pain is to help us avoid bad things happening to our body.  When an injury happens, things hurt.  That’s the way it’s supposed to be.  That is called “acute pain”. 

Chronic pain, however, is pain that lasts well after the 6 week time that it should normally take for an injury to get better.   Some would say that you can’t call it chronic pain until it has lasted for 3 months.   Either way the pain is lasting well after the injury.

There are many medical strategies to try to help deal with chronic pain and it is absolutely crucial that anybody who has chronic pain seek medical attention to figure out why they have it and what can be done about it.   Nobody--- and I repeat nobody--- should ever deal with their chronic pain using alternative strategies until they have had a thorough evaluation. 

Unfortunately for many people, after the evaluation there is the reality that their chronic pain is still with them.   It just stays and stays and stays.   In that case it becomes very reasonable to pursue alternative strategies as long as they are safe.

More recently I have been promoting nutritional strategies to complement the control of chronic pain and there have been some exciting new discoveries surfacing.

Vitamin D

I've been writing about the importance of vitamin d for some time now. The evidence backing up what I've written continues to pile up. In a recent article by Vital Choice's Craig Weatherby, findings concur that an intake level higher than the recommended daily allowance (RDA) is needed to prevent falls and fractures.

Falls that break hip or pelvis bones often lead to a serious downward health spiral ... and the results of clinical trials indicate that vitamin D pills can reduce the risk of falling among older people. Vitamin D is a critical factor in bone health, but it is clearly better to prevent falls than to hope that stronger bones will withstand the shock.*

As mentioned in several of my articles, preventative medicine is always the best solution. And if we can prevent fractures, especially of the hip - quite common to the elderly, by strengthening the muscular system, which in turn will prevent many of the unnecessary falls, then we will have accomplished our mission.

Now, a new analysis of the best clinical evidence finds that the US recommended daily allowance (RDA) for vitamin D intake by adults aged 51 to 70 (400 IU) is only about half the dose needed to reduce the risk of falls among older people (Bischoff-Ferrari HA et al. BMJ 2009).

The current RDA for vitamin D are 400 IU for adults aged 51 to 70 and 600 IU for people over 70. And the RDA for all persons younger than 51 is a scant 200 IU.*

So, how much vitamin d is needed to be effective in producing stronger muscles? And what does vitamin d have to do with stronger muscles? Those are two very important questions that can be answered by the team of researchers that have been conducting studies around the world. First, let's look at the daily doses needed to build stronger muscles.

Though the official safe upper intake limit is only 2,000 IU per day, vitamin D intake is proven safe at 10,000 IU per day … a daily level that’s 25 times the current RDA for adults 51 to 70 (400 IU) and 16 times the current RDA for adults over 70 (600 IU).

Most experts recommend taking at least 1,000 IU via food and supplements, and prefer an intake of 2,000 IU to 4,000 IU per day ... unless most of your skin is exposed to 20 to 30 minutes of strong sunlight per day.*

Is all the research too new for the government to change their position on the RDA of vitamin d? Is there too much money to be made by the medical facilities that preventing fractures will actually take away some of their revenue? I may be talking out loud, or voicing my opinion, but preventing any type of injury or illness makes sense to me.

So, what does vitamin d have to do with building strong muscles?

Vitamin D stimulates synthesis of protein, the building material for muscle (Hamilton B 2009).

And as USDA researchers wrote this year, "Vitamin D supplementation has been shown to improve tests of muscle performance, reduce falls, and possibly impact on muscle fiber composition and morphology in vitamin D deficient older adults." (Ceglia L 2009)*

Weight Loss Tips

When we lose weight we don’t just lose fat. We lose a combination of body fat, and muscle tissue. For example, studies show that when we diet, the weight we lose is on average 75 percent fat and 25 percent muscle. Furthermore, a relatively high percentage of this weight loss is likely to be water loss. Remember, water accounts for about 70 percent of the total body weight of an average person, with muscle tissue containing roughly 75 percent water (plus 20 percent protein and 5 percent minerals), and body fat containing roughly 50 percent water.

Factors That Affect Speed of Weight Loss

The human body does not lose weight at a regular or uniform speed. Different people reduce weight at different speeds. This is because weight reduction is dependent on various factors, including: weight; diet and lifestyle; level of physical activity; health and genes (inc. metabolic rate); the level of stress experienced.

Weight Loss is Not an Exact Science

As you can see, not only does weight loss include other things besides fat-tissue, the actual speed of weight reduction is determined by a variety of individual factors. So it’s difficult, if not impossible, to give a precise answer to the question “how fast can I lose weight?” However, as a rough guide, here are some basic guidelines for maximum weight loss.

What is the Most Weight You Can Lose?

It is possible to lose anything up to about 20 pounds of weight per week, but most of this is likely to be water. It will therefore be regained as soon as normal eating resumes.

What is the Most Fat You Can Lose? The maximum amount of body fat a healthy person can lose is about 3-4 pounds per week. Typically, only obese people are likely to be able to lose this amount of fat. By comparison, a woman of average weight (about 140 pounds) is likely to lose a maximum of about 1-1.5 pounds per week.

Why You Can’t Lose More Weight

The human body is not designed to shed weight. It is designed to survive! Our basic body chemistry endures from prehistoric times, when famine, rather than obesity, was the biggest threat. This is why it won’t lose excessive amounts of fat in a short period of time. In fact, if you drastically reduce your calorie-intake, your brain takes active steps to slow down your metabolism, in order to conserve calories. This is one reason why we encounter a weight loss plateau.

Side Effects of Losing Weight Too Quickly

Too rapid weight loss (e.g.. after bariatric surgery) can lead to unpleasant side effects. The two most common effects of over-rapid weight reduction include:
Appearance of Loose Skin
If you reduce weight too quickly, your skin does not have time to shrink to your leaner body shape. The only effective treatment for this is surgical intervention, such as Abdominoplasty (tummy tuck).
Gallstones
Studies have shown that people who lose excessive amounts of weight very quickly, have a greater risk of developing gallstones than those who lose weight at slower speeds. Too rapid weight reduction may also cause “silent” gallstones to become active.

Weight Regain (Weight Rebound)

Sudden fast weight reduction is usually caused by artificial changes to our eating habits as a result of (e.g.) very-low-calorie diet plans, or bariatric surgery. Not surprisingly, this does not give us enough time to learn new eating habits. So although our physical weight may have changed, our mental approach to food and eating remains the same. In the absence of medical supervision, or other support, we commonly find ourselves unable to sustain the new dietary habits required to maintain our lighter weight, and regain all our lost weight.

If your having trouble losing weight, could it be your mother or father's fault? According to the authors of a British study, "children are more likely to become obese when their same-gender parent is obese."

The researchers from Peninsula Medical School studied 226 families. Here's where the link to your mother or father, regarding your weight comes in; "they found that the daughters of obese mothers were more likely to struggle with weight problems." They also "found that the sons of obese fathers ran a higher risk of becoming obese " (Perez-Pastor EM et al. 2009).

So you have to look no further than your mother or father when it comes to your weight. However, if you're a man, you may be able to blame the weight on him, and if you're a woman, you may be able to place the blame on your mother. The reason I say this is because the authors of that study "did not find the same link between mothers and sons or between fathers and their daughters."

Now, before you go blaming your mother or father on your weight problems, your may want to first start by looking into the mirror. Not all the time, because genetics (we won't get into that in this article) does have a lot to do with it, it's the person in the mirror that needs to take responsibility for their own eating habits, and weight loss and/or weight management strategies.

I know it's easier to point your finger and say it's that person's fault, but we need to become more responsible for the food we eat, and our daily activities. Typically, if the parents are lazy, or couch potatoes, the children will be the same. Some how, some way, that pattern has to be broken. And the best way to break the pattern is by starting with self.

When you were growing up, who did you look up to? More than likely, your parents were your role models. Little girls liked to hang with their mothers, and boys loved to hang with their fathers, and I believe that's what this study is all about. It's about learning, or becoming, like your mother and/or father.

Included in that study, their research showed that ""the risks of obesity among eight year old girls were 10 times greater if their mother was obese. With boys, the risk of obesity was six times greater if their father was obese. And compared to the apparent influence exerted by the weight of their same-gender parent, the weight of the children measured at the age of eight bore no significant relationship to their birth weight."

Here are the results, if you were thinking your weight problem was all genetics. The findings in this study suggests that "childhood obesity is not primarily caused by genetic traits passed down by same-gender parents."

As I've mentioned, it's not all genetics. We pick up the same "good" and/or "bad" habits from the people that influence our lives the most. And as a child, most likely, it was your parents. Just as the authors of the study wrote,

"Childhood obesity today seems to be largely confined to those whose same-sex parents are obese, and the link does not seem to be genetic. Parental obesity, like smoking, might be targeted in the interests of the child." (Perez-Pastor EM et al. 2009).

I would think that this finding (above all others) seems very important because it may mean that w as parents can reduce our same-gender child’s risk of obesity by losing weight ourselves. That's what I'm trying to communicate in this article. If we take a long hard look into the mirror, we may find the source of the real problem.

This should not be news to anyone of us. However, it may be something that we are just hiding from, or something we don't want to deal with. If we are going to break the pattern of obesity in our family, you may have to take a stand, and take action. Weight loss does not have to be painful or even a chore. We just have to use common sense. Weight loss can all start by eating healthier meals, and becoming more active - put down the television remote control and go for a walk.

One of the most important challenges that you can experience in your life is dealing with chronic pain, if you ever challenged to experience this problem.   When somebody starts experiencing chronic pain one of the first things they also experience is fear.  This fear can be a huge problem.   The fear then becomes it’s own problem and literally magnifies the pain.   Fear becomes paralyzing.

Courage is “doing the right thing in spite of fear”.    Many people think that a courageous person is one without fear.   Actually courage is “doing the right thing in spite of or in the face of fear”.   When somebody is dealing with chronic pain and experiences fear that begins to disable that person’s life, courage calls that person to go against the flow.  Courage leads the person with chronic pain to go against what fear is telling the person to do.   Growing from the point of fear to the point of courage is truly “growing”.   This person will become a more complete and whole person---- is spite of their chronic pain!

Perhaps it’s time to ask: what is Chronic Pain anyway?

Well, we all know what pain is.   But what is chronic pain?    Well the purpose of pain is to help us avoid bad things happening to our body.  When an injury happens, things hurt.  That’s the way it’s supposed to be.  That is called “acute pain”.  

Chronic pain, however, is pain that lasts well after the 6 week time that it should normally take for an injury to get better.   Some would say that you can’t call it chronic pain until it has lasted for 3 months.   Either way the pain is lasting well after the injury.

There are many medical strategies to try to help deal with chronic pain and it is absolutely crucial that anybody who has chronic pain seek medical attention to figure out why they have it and what can be done about it.   Nobody--- and I repeat nobody--- should ever deal with their chronic pain using alternative strategies until they have had a thorough evaluation.  

Unfortunately for many people, after the evaluation there is the reality that their chronic pain is still with them.   It just stays and stays and stays.   In that case it becomes very reasonable to pursue alternative strategies as long as they are safe.

Fat is another nutrient your body requires. Yeah, I know that sounds pretty strange, but fat comes in both saturated and unsaturated forms. Saturated fat puts you at risk of health problems. Unsaturated fat is healthy; however, if it goes through a refinement process, it can become saturated fat.

Vitamins are required nutrients. Every vitamin performs a different task within your body. For example, vitamins can work with the metabolism to help with energy levels, and some vitamins can even help prevent disease.

Here are some good examples; vitamins A, C, and E, called antioxidants, can assist with the prevention of coronary artery disease by keeping build up from occurring on artery walls. Whole grain products should also be consumed each day. Many nutritionists suggest that at least half of your grain intake should be whole grain based. Milk is also a necessity to a healthy diet. However, it should be low fat milk. Ten and thirty percent of your calorie intake should come from fat. Make sure the fats you consume are in the form of unsaturated fats.
