Omega Prime

Many of us have heard of the importance of including omega-3 fatty acids in our diets. However, we've never known why. I an effort to find the true answer, I've taken to Google in a search for a definitive reason. With that said, I've found many web sites with great articles, and hope my findings will finally show you why it's important to include omega-3 fatty acids into your diet.

According to Dr. Ben Kim, a chiropractor, acupuncturist, and natural health activist, he says the key health benefits of including omega-3 fatty acids in your diet are:

  1. Omega-3 fatty acids can help keep your heart and blood vessels healthy. In doing so, they can reverse and prevent high blood pressure, as well as reduce your risk of suffering a stroke.
  2. Omega-3 fatty acids can decrease pain and inflammation throughout your body.
  3. Omega-3 fatty acids may help prevent breast and colon cancer.
  4. Omega-3 fatty acids can help to reverse and prevent depression and other mental/emotional health challenges. [1]

A research doctor, Dr. James Hopkins, commented on Dr. Kim's article and said that "...I have found that patients do better with fish oil as far as lipid profiles are concerned, also inflammatory disease conditions and other health concerns and enjoy more benefits from fish oil."

Fish oil, especially found in fish like salmon, cod, mackerel, and tuna, is one of the best sources of the omega-3 fatty acids. A lot of people do not like fish. If that's the case, is there another way to get essential fatty acids? Yes, through dark green leafy vegetables, flax seeds, hemp seeds, walnuts, and a variety of vegetable oils.

According to Dr. Kim, the leafy vegetables and flax seeds are a better source of ALA (Alpha-Linolenic Acid), not EPA (EicosoPentaenoic Acid) and DHA (DocosaHexaenoic Acid), which are found in the fish listed above. So what does all this mean?

"Your body is able to convert ALA into EPA and DHA. So theoretically, if you are in excellent health and eat lots of dark green leafy vegetables, ground flax seeds, and walnuts, your body should be able to produce enough EPA and DHA from ALA to provide all of the health benefits listed above." [1]

"People who support the use of fish oil for a direct source of EPA and DHA will sometimes cite studies that claim that some groups of people are not able to convert ALA to DHA, at least not very efficiently." [1]

Dr. Kim says, ":Some people who support eating only plant foods raise objections to using fish oil, such as the possibility of omega-3 fatty acids in fish oil turning rancid, as well as the possibility of fish oil containing environmental pollutants like mercury. These objections are valid, as independent studies performed by organizations like consumerlabs.com have found that some brands of fish oil contain rancid fatty acids that can harm your health. And there's no question that fish from all parts of the world stand a chance of being contaminated to some degree by mercury and other industrial pollutants."

I support a product by TriVita, called Omega Prime. Omega Prime helps meet the American Heart Association (AHA) guidelines. One daily dose of Omega Prime provides the amount of Omega-3 recommended by the AHA for healthy individuals, as well as for those who have heart disease or the risk of it.

That leads me to another article I found that agrees with Dr. Kim. The article states that, "A new study just published in the European Heart Journal concludes that eating fatty fish and the marine omega-3 fatty acids found in fish oil appears to protect men from heart failure." [2]

"Because heart failure (also known as congestive heart failure, or CHF) is an enormous health problem in the U.S. According to the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute, approximately five million Americans have the condition and about 300,000 die from heart failure each year." [2]

There are many studies that have been conducted to prove, or possibly discredit, the importance of omega-3 fatty acids. However, I've yet to find a study that claims omega-3 fatty acids do not benefit the human body, especially the heart. If you don't believe me; take to Google and see what you can find on omega-3 essential fatty acids.

If you're concerned with taking fish oil as a supplement, Omega Prime is free of mercury/contaminant free fish oil, which is the result of an exclusive 10 stage process to ensure its purity, potency and quality (plus a higher level of Vitamin E for maximizing the fish oil's potency).
