Can AARP Help You Plan for Retirement?

Can AARP Help You Plan for Retirement?

What can men do to get ready for the life-style changes that are created by retirement? In an article on the AARP web site, Dr. Rosalind S. Dorlen of Summit, New Jersey says she believes that men – before they retire – should develop a written plan for what they want to do in retirement. The plan, she said, should resemble the business plans or strategic plans that many men routinely create at work.

Creating a "Business Plan for Retirement," Dr. Dorlen said, will help men identify potential problems in advance, allowing them time to obtain professional help from a retirement counselor or life-style coach. You may be able to find such a person within the AARP organization.

What is AARP, and can they help you?

The Washington Post calls it "the influential seniors group." The New York Times calls it "the influential lobby for older Americans." They're speaking of the group that used to call itself the American Association of Retired Persons. It now calls itself simply AARP because some members objected to the term "retired." That should be one indication that AARP members are not all "senior" or "older."

AARP's magazine, which calls itself "AARP The Magazine," describes itself as the world's largest circulation magazine, serving "the needs and interests of people 50 and over." Being 50 doesn't sound too old or senior.

The circulation, 22 million, and the membership, around 35 million, are impressive. Those numbers alone would seem to validate media claims that this is an "influential" group. But those assumptions would be in error. Many sign up for AARP because of the discounts on such things as hotel rooms and car rentals. They have no idea what the organization does politically, and many don't care. Recent evidence shows that writers for gay rights, pornographic, and pro-drug magazines have taken control of AARP The Magazine (we'll save that for another article).

Planning for retirement is something most people do not do, or they think that having a 401k, or some other retirement account, is all they need. Many do not take into consideration housing or health care, two very important needs, but most often overlooked. Is staying in my current residence right for me? Is moving into a retirement community the best place to live? What happens if I get sick? Who will take care of me, and where will I live? These are important questions that can be answered, and planned for, before retirement.

Besides housing and healthcare planning there needs to be a plan to stay active. A person can only watch so much television, play so much golf, or play so many games of cards. There needs to be plenty of activities to not only keep the mind sharp but also keep the body healthy.

Dr. James "Chip" Long of Little Rock, Arkansas said, "When a person retires, there is a void that is left in their life." Finding ways to fill that void, Dr. Long noted, is one of the most challenging aspects of adjusting to retirement.

He recommends that people approaching retirement sit down with a mental health professional or other adviser to discuss what they expect from retirement and how they plan to spend their time.

When he is consulted, Dr. Long said, he puts the emphasis on activities that are varied but meaningful." There is only so much golf that one person can play," he said.

AARP may not be able to help, but planning for your retirement is important. I believe that's what AARP was created to do, to help the aging baby-boomers navigate the coming retirement, although that may not be what its current agenda looks like. Whether you become a member of AARP or not, there is still a lot of good information available on their web site (you may just have to navigate through all the rhetoric).

If you don't like AARP, or you do not like their agenda, there are other options for retirement. One that many people are turning to is a home based business. If you're looking for more information on a home business, contact me, or click on one of the links below.

Computing business profitability

Computing business profitability

Caught up in the day to day details of running a business, many business owners and entrepreneurs overlook an important activity: Computing business profitability. Instead, they go along, not thinking about what's happening with their business finances, until there's a cash flow problem.

Never confuse profitability with cash flow.

But cash flow is not an indication of profitability. Depending on the time of year, companies that are profitable may have smaller bank balances. And companies who are losing money may have higher ones.

Computing business profitability can help you make more money.

More money usually means business profitability. Try thinking outside the box.

Are you spending a significant amount of time in low-return activities?

Haven't we all heard about this one! If you are spending the majority of your day completing tasks which are administrative in nature and/or which can be easily completed by other people then you are not putting yourself to best use. For most of us, the best value-adding activity we can be involved with is in bringing business in the door by building relationships, talking to prospective customers and promoting our business.

Think outside the box. Think about buying customers. If that isn't outside the box, I don't know what is!

Increase Your Business Profitability

The Best Way To Increase Your Business Profitability

Are you spending large amounts on glossy, slick marketing materials and expecting business to pour in without any additional effort?

Some folks think glossy brochures and slick marketing materials are a nice addition to more active forms of marketing such as meeting people, calling people and speaking to people. However, brochures and business cards, no matter how beautiful, do not replace direct contact. If you are spending money on flashy marketing materials in the place of marketing directly, your business profitability will suffer.

Marketing materials are an expense, and to be sure they are working, you need to get some handle on the return on your investment. At the very least you should be tracking where new business is coming from so you can get an idea of whether your marketing materials are contributing to any new business you get.

The best way to increase your business profitability is to think outside the box.

For example have you thought of buying customers? Yes a very good way to increase business profitability is not to buy advertising, but to buy customers.

Business Profitability

Business Profitability

When it comes to computing business profitability, one thing that I have found that highly impacts your business profitability is your willingness to ask for the sale.

A lot of us have the mind set that if we directly ask some one to buy, were being pushy or obnoxious. I can tell you right now if you have that mind set, your business profitability will suffer big time.

This is YOUR business, without sales you have no business profitability. Zero sales equals zero profit.

One way to overcome this mindset is to practice asking for the sale in language that you are comfortable with (not too wishy-washy please). Write down what you want to say first, then practice it over and over. There is also plenty of stuff out there on handling objections. Prepare your responses to the most common objections so you are well armed before you speak with your prospective customers.

Another way to overcome this challenge and improve your Business Profitability is to just buy customers.

Some times you need to think outside the box. For example ….. have you ever considered buying customers to increase your Business Profitability? It works and it works every time.

Best Time to Start a Home Business

Why now is the best time to start a home based business!

As I'm writing this article, the Dow Jones is dropping faster than George Bush's popularity. The main Canadian stock index has dropped over 10% this week! China, UK, Japan, and many other countries around the world have declining stock markets, and many economists don't see it getting better any time soon.

The sub-prime mortgage crisis is shaking things up pretty badly. Although originating in the U.S., the devastation is spreading throughout the entire world. The greed, created in the U.S., has shown its ugly face all around the world.

Financial institutions everywhere are tightening up credit to the point that small business and regular folks like you and I have to seriously reconsider budgets and next year's expenditures. It's also the right time to start a home based business.

Who's to blame for all this?

The Conservatives say it's the Liberals for forcing banks to lower lending standards to encourage home ownership? Many articles and web sites support this argument. In fact, some say it was Clinton who actually signed a bill back in the early 1990's to force lending institutes to loan money to low income families.

The bill was then taken to the next level by ACORN, a group supported by Obama and other Liberals like Barney Frank. So if you're looking to blame it on the Liberals, there is plenty of information to backup your argument.

On the other hand, the Liberals are saying it's the Conservatives fault for failing to properly regulate investment banking and securities activity. A good argument for the Liberals. It's hard to put regulations on the institutions that may bring you personal gain. Many say that Wall Street execs and government officials are in bed with one another. A hard point to argue against!

Aren't the banks and investment houses partly responsible? Aren't they the ones that encouraged a culture of short-term greed, excessive executive compensation, and high-risk instruments? I'm sure you could find some individuals that would have good arguments for these questions.

Let's not for get the unqualified prospects, for being naive enough to think that their income levels could justify home ownership, and accepting the "sweet talk" of the real estate brokers and loan officers. I believe a lot of us fell into that trap; if not, we may not be in this mess today.

I would have to say that we all share in the blame for thinking that the real estate bubble would keep getting bigger and bigger, forever and ever... Back in 2000, I did mention to a real estate agent that I didn't think the real estate prices could not continue to increase at the current rate. Well, like they say...what goes up, must come down!

I don't think the Americans and/or world learned anything from the Savings and Loan Crisis in the 1980s. Now, $700 Billion U.S. plus many billions more worldwide are being poured into a system that is clearly corrupt and in need of cleansing and a radical overhaul.

Luckily for Canada and the U.S., national elections are helping us focus attention on the bailout, err... rescue package. Unfortunately, no government, private corporation or individual is wealthy or wise enough to steer us to salvation. We need more than a savior or maverick as president.

Not even a Sarah Palin wink will do the trick, although I understand she has done wonders for Tina Fey's acting career...

The solution to this mess?

The government, Democrats and Republicans alike, bankers, financial advisers, stock brokers, moms and dads, me and you, are all responsible for the mess we are in. Greed has run rampant and it needs to be stopped. So, is there a solution to the problem? I believe there is, but it has to start with each one of us.

We need people, all around the world, to stand up and take responsibility on their own. Stop pointing fingers! One way we can take responsibility is by starting a home based business. Stop waiting for the government to bail you out (we see where that's going).

Working from home will save you money on gasoline. Having a home based business will allow you to earn more money. Working from home will increase your tax deductions, which means more money in your pocket. If you earn more money, you will spend more. I believe that will help the economy!

Instead of using your credit card and spending money you do not have, you can earn money and pay cash for the items you so desire. I believe that will help the economy!

I propose that everyone start a home business. By doing so, it will allow you to make more money, and save gasoline. It may even solve our financial and energy crisis.

Business Profitability

Business Profitability

I have found there is a big difference in Business Profitability when talking about a traditional business as opposed to a home based business. So lets talk Business Profitability for a home based business.

With the economy in the shape it is, doesn't matter where you are in the world, the need for Business Profitability has never been greater.

So many home based business owners work hard - really hard - just to break even or keep afloat. Each one of us deserves reward for our efforts, whether that be financial or personal. The question to ask yourself is whether you are directing your effort in the right places, to get the reward you want? How is your Business Profitability?

Of the businesses I've seen and worked in, there are plenty of ways to mis-spend effort - that is, to work hard - but on the wrong things. This in its self can impact your Business Profitability

For example how are you doing with your marketing? Once you have committed to owning and running a business you must be equally committed to marketing and selling the products and services of that business. To show Business Profitability you must treat your home based business, like a business. It is difficult, if not impossible, to stay and remain profitable without a commitment to ongoing concerted marketing.

To get more out of your marketing, to get Business Profitability create a simple marketing plan that includes marketing activity every day, every week and every month.

This isn't as difficult as some would make you believe. Marketing plans combine formal activities (such as advertising, promotions and writing) with informal activities (such as making new contacts) . Don't underestimate the power of talking to people about what you do. Use every opportunity, every time, and when you do you will see your Business Profitability soar.

Some times you need to think outside the box. For example ….. have you ever considered buying customers to increase your Business Profitability? It works and it works every time.

Ensure Home Business Success

Ensure Home Business Success

Why do some people succeed and others fail with a home business? Is it because one person has all the luck and the other person does not? I don't think so! It's my belief and understanding that the reason one person succeeds and the other fails is lack of dedication and determination, and the failure to do the important things first.

Everyone has the same amount of hours in a day; it's how we use those hours that determines our outcome. Running a home business takes time and hard work to succeed. Using your time wisely is important to the success of your home business. Doing the important things first, like writing articles and press releases, is the key to your success. The important items may not be very exciting, but they are necessary. If you don't do them, they will not get done.

Too many home business owners rely of their down line, or other members of their business organization to do the important things, while the business owner does the fun and exciting things. Success, in most home business cases, can be traced back to the common, ordinary tasks that need to be done on a daily basis. Are you spending enough time on those mundane daily tasks? If so, you're on your way to becoming successful with your home business. If not, you may want to refocus on your priorities.

To fully explain, all you have to do is look at any athlete, in any sport. The high achieving athletes practice, practice and practice, doing the same things (tasks) over and over again. For example, the best golfer in the world, Tiger Woods, hits more golf balls on a daily basis than any other golfer on the PGA Tour. Is there any question who the greatest golfer in the world is? Do all golfers have the same hours in the day? Absolutely! Do all the golfers in the world spend the same amount of time on the practice range? No! Why? There's no glory or excitement in practicing, and becoming the world's best takes dedication and determination.

That's the problem with most home based businesses; there's no glory or excitement in the mundane. Most home business owners are not willing to put in the time to make their business a success. If it doesn't happen within a short period of time, we give up. Our society is so full of self and the need for immediate gratification that we fail to realize the importance the common, everyday tasks needed to succeed. I know the high achievers, whether in sports, or a home business, do the non-glorious, common everyday tasks to ensure their success.

Are you willing to start putting forth the effort it takes to become successful in your home business, or are you waiting for that "lucky" break to come your way? Are you dedicated and determined to become successful? If so, may I suggest starting with the important tasks that will ensure your success.
