Benefits of Vitamin C

Ascorbic acid, found in vitamin C supplements, prevents several debilitating conditions and increases the body's immunity. Protecting cells, enhancing the immune system, and its antioxidant agent, are just a few of the benefits you receive when taking vitamin C. Vitamin C also helps to keep collagen, tendons, and ligaments strong and healthy.

Collagen is the most ubiquitous substance in the body because it is the most abundant of the fibers contained in connective tissue. Connective tissue gives our body form and supports our organs. Collagen is everywhere in the body, and vitamin C plays a role in the formation of collagen.

From my research, I've learned that when collagen is produced, there is a complex series of events, some occurring inside of the cell, and some outside of the cell. Vitamin C is active inside of the cell, where it hydroxylates (adds hydrogen and oxygen) to two amino acids: proline and lysine. This helps form a precursor molecule called procollagen that is later packaged and modified into collagen outside of the cell. Without vitamin C, collagen formation is disrupted, causing a wide variety of problems throughout the body.

Vitamin C benefits also includes the recycling of other antioxidants, and in most cases, it's better to consume Vitamin C along with other antioxidants like carotenoids, vitamin E and flavonoids.

Vitamin C can be used as an antidote for illnesses such as cold and flu. As a matter of fact, it reduces the intensity and duration of many health ailments. Wounds are reported to heal much faster since ascorbic acid has inflammation inhibitory action. Gums are protected by a regular consumption of the ascorbic acid. For this purpose, it is generally taken with flavonoids. Vitamin C has also been known to reduce cholesterol levels, high blood pressure and has helped in preventing arteriosclerosis.

With all the good qualities hidden within this all important vitamin, what happens if there is a deficiency of vitiman C? Vitamin C deficiencies include susceptibility to infection particularly bronchial infections and cold, joint ache and altered digestion. Other signs of ascorbic acid deficiencies are lethargy (lack of energy), susceptibility to bruise easily, weak teeth and poor digestion. The most known vitamin C deficiency is the disease called scurvy. However, it's not so common in Western countries; it features soft spongy bleeding gums, severe debility, edema, poor wound healing, and bleeding under the skin.

The benefits from vitamin C can be achieved mostly when it is consumed on a regular daily basis, through supplements. Vitamin C is not a one time dose. As mentioned previously, the body requires ascorbic acid for maintaining various body systems and their functions. Vitamin C is water soluble, which means, the body loses some of it through urine. That's why taking a daily supplement of this all important vitamin is advised.

There are many researches that indicate that ascorbic acid prevents certain types of cancer as it protects healthy cells from free-radical damage. According to research, it specifically helps reducing the risks of cancers of the stomach and esophagus. This is possible because it blocks the conversion of nitrates and nitrites have been known to turn into cancer-causing components.

Consult your health care professional for additional information regarding vitamin C, and also get their recommendation for the proper dosage. It is possible that both over consumption and/or under usage of this vitamin may can be harmful to the body. If you like the majority, you'd rather recive all the benefits of taking vitamin C, and stay away from health issues that may arise by not having enough vitamin C.

Most pharmaceutical companies claim that all supplements are the same. I believe there is a difference between many supplements. Although I don't have all the answers, I personally prefer the Vitamin C crystals, but it's up to you to find the supplements that deliver the best results. One way to find a supplement that will meet your needs is to search Google.

Weight Loss

Weight Loss - Scientists may have found a breakthrough in calcium, the most abundant mineral in the body. In a study published in the British Journal of Nutrition, a diet that boosted calcium intake led to more significant weight loss than its control group. The study took a sample of obese women and through a 15-week period, had them on a diet of no more than 600 mg of calcium per day. The recommended daily allowance of calcium is 1000 mg more or less as depending on age (1,000 mg for 19-50 years old, 1,200 for 51+ years). In terms of food rich in calcium, the list includes:

  • milk = 1 cup = 300 mg
  • yogurt = 1 cup = 415 mg
  • cheese = 1.5 oz = 300 mg
  • broccoli = 1 cup cooked = 94 mg
  • spinach = 1/2 cup cooked from frozen = 139 mg
  • almonds = 1 oz = 75 mg

In addition to the low calorie diet, the subjects of the weight loss study also consumed two calcium supplements per day equalling 1,200 mg. The control group were given a placebo and the results were then monitored. The group that took the calcium supplements lost 13.2 lbs while the control group lost 2.2 lbs.

One caveat to point out where that the test subjects had a diet that was already calcium deficient so this study does not delve into an already calcium rich diet.

Angelo Tremblay, holder of the Canada Research Chair in Environment and Energy Balance hypothesized that the brain seems to detect a lack of calcium in the body. This can lead to the desire to eat more stifling weight loss.

Professor Tremblay’s first foray into the relationship between calcium and weight loss occurred in 2003. He found that women’s diets that were poor in calcium led to more body fat, bigger waistlines, and higher bad cholesterol levels than their higher level counterparts. Along the same lines, in 2007 Professor Tremblay found a direct correlation between calcium and a lower heart disease risk.

What is the relationship between vitamin B12, homocysteine, and heart disease?

A deficiency of vitamin B12, folate, or vitamin B6 may increase your blood level of homocysteine, an amino acid normally found in your blood. There is evidence that an elevated blood level of homocysteine is an independent risk factor for heart disease and stroke. The evidence suggests that high levels of homocysteine may damage coronary arteries or make it easier for blood clotting cells called platelets to clump together and form a clot. However, there is currently no evidence available to suggest that lowering homocysteine level with vitamins will actually reduce your risk of heart disease. Clinical intervention trials are needed to determine whether supplementation with vitamin B12, folic acid, or vitamin B6 can help protect you against developing coronary heart disease.

The results of more than 80 studies indicate that even moderately elevated levels of homocysteine in the blood increase the risk of cardiovascular diseases, though the mechanism by which homocysteine increases the disease risk remains the subject of a great deal of research. The amount of homocysteine in the blood is regulated by at least three vitamins: folate, vitamin B12, and vitamin B6. Analysis of the results of 12 homocysteine-lowering trials showed folic acid supplementation (0.5-5 mg/day) had the greatest lowering effect on blood homocysteine levels (25 percent decrease); co-supplementation with folic acid and vitamin B12 (mean 0.5 mg/day or 500 mcg/day) provided an additional 7 percent reduction (32 percent decrease) in blood homocysteine concentrations. The results of a sequential supplementation trial in 53 men and women indicated that after folic acid supplementation, vitamin B12 became the major determinant of plasma homocysteine levels. Some evidence indicates that vitamin B12 deficiency is a major cause of elevated homocysteine levels in people over the age of 60. Two studies found blood methylmalonic acid (MMA) levels to be elevated in more than 60 percent of elderly individuals with elevated homocysteine levels. An elevated MMA level in conjunction with elevated homocysteine, in the absence of impaired kidney function, suggests either a vitamin B12 deficiency or a combined B12 and folate deficiency. Thus, it is important to evaluate vitamin B12 status as well as kidney function in older individuals with elevated homocysteine levels prior to initiating homocysteine-lowering therapy.

Although increased intake of folic acid and vitamin B12 has been found to decrease homocysteine levels, it is not presently known whether increasing intake of these vitamins will translate to reductions in risk for cardiovascular diseases. However, several randomized placebo-controlled trials are presently being conducted to determine whether homocysteine lowering through folic acid and other B vitamin supplementation reduces the incidence of cardiovascular diseases. A meta-analysis of data from four of the ongoing trials shows that B vitamin supplementation had no significant effect on risk of coronary heart disease or stroke, but only about 14,000 participants were included in analysis and thus any conclusions are limited. Nevertheless, the completion of ongoing clinical trials should help to answer whether or not supplemental B vitamins lower risk for cardiovascular diseases.

The Inside on B-12

First a Bit of Background on the B -
Vitamin B-12 cannot be produced inside your body; it must come from your diet. Once you eat foods containing B-12, it is not easily absorbed and broken down for use within your body. This is because B-12 is very large and complex. Only about 1% of the B-12 in the food you eat is absorbed.

Certain bacteria and sea microbes are able to dissolve and digest the metal cobalt and convert it to Vitamin B-12. We cannot digest metal. When we are young, bacteria in our intestines "ferment" the B-12 from our diet. Fermentation is a long process that may take as long as three weeks to get the meager 1% of the vitamin into our system.

Different types of B-12

B-12s are stored in various organs and tissues. Some go to your liver, kidneys and muscles, while other B-12s circulate in your body fluids, primarily your blood and cerebral spinal fluid (CSF). This is where the story of Vitamin B-12 gets interesting because each type of B-12 has a different function.

Methylcobalamin is a co-enzyme form of Vitamin B-12 that resides in your liver and kidneys. Methylcobalamin is not a complete form of B-12. Rather, it is a B-12 "co-enzyme" that is activated for specific uses. It is primarily for detoxification. For instance, methylcobalamin participates in getting rid of toxic metals, such as lead and mercury. Methylcobalamin is very effective at removing dangerous levels of homocysteine. That's why we formulated HCY Guard with methylcobalamin.

Adenosylcobalamin is another form of B-12 co-enzyme; it lives in your muscles. It allows your muscles to stretch without tearing. Cyanocobalamin is the main form of Vitamin B-12 and it's the type we use in our Sublingual B-12. It is a "whole" B-12, just like hydroxycobalamin. The other B-12s are made from these two sources. Cyanocobalamin resides in your nerves where it heals the scars created by stress, trauma, vitamin deficiency, toxins and just plain time. This has the effect of making you feel lighter. It gives you energy and stamina. Cyanocobalamin also creates a mild euphoria that many people say "just makes me feel better."

Hydroxycobalamin is a whole form of B-12 often administered to children. It also lives in the nervous system and blood. It is found in cerebral spinal fluid. It metabolizes very slowly, so most people don't report much of an energy boost with hydroxycobalamin.

B-12 Nature\'s Best

B vitamins are nature’s "feel-good" vitamins, affecting your energy and vitality as well as your mood and memory. In fact, they are critical to your health and the functioning of your body.

B vitamins help with:
Sustained mental energy
Improved mood
Mental focus and clarity
Improved memory
Nerve sheath repair

The nervous system is your body’s super highway, transporting energy and information between your brain and cells. B-12 is like the cellular repair team, filling in potholes and smoothing out the ruts so everything zips along. Not enough B-12 and the potholes and problems begin to build. And the energy highway slows to a crawl.

You might experience this as brain fog: a lack of focus and memory loss that can leave you feeling sluggish, irritable, anxious or downright blue. B-12 repairs this super highway.

Age, stress, digestive problems and other things can prevent B-12 from being absorbed in your body. This can lead to a B-12 deficiency. So take your B-12 daily and be sure you take sublingually for maximum benefit! Be "B" smart!

With B-12 Absorption is Key

The dietary absorption of vitamin B-12 is complex. It's not just a matter of swallowing a bunch of it (dietary or supplemental) and letting the guts do the work. There is something called "intrinsic factor" which is made in certain cells in the stomach that must be present in order for B-12 to be absorbed at a point in the very end of the small intestine (the ileum).

The main sources of B-12 include meat, eggs, and dairy products. Acids in the stomach separate the B-12 from the protein source, at which point it must combine with intrinsic factor. The vitamin B-12/intrinsic factor complex travels through the intestine and is absorbed in the terminal ileum by cells with specific receptors for the complex. The absorbed complex is then transported via plasma and stored in the liver. The interruption of one or any combination of these steps places a person at risk of developing deficiency. Not all substances are easily absorbed sublingually, if at all. A substance’s ability to be absorbed is affected by lipid solubility, the permeability of the solution, ionization (pH), and the molecular weight of the substance. Dr. Libby’s extensive background in biochemistry and nutrition, along with his years of study with Nobel Prize chemist, Linus Pauling, make his patented Sublingual B-12 formula second to none. Sublingual B-12, B-6, & Folic Acid is readily absorbed, delivering almost all of its power directly into the bloodstream.
